UFDC Scholarship Fund Application

Objectives and Rules

In keeping with the educational purpose stated in UFDC’s Articles of Incorporation, UFDC’s Department of ReAL Services has established a Scholarship Fund.  This Fund has been established to promote original research leading to better knowledge, understanding and appreciation of dolls. At present there are four titled scholarships available which are endowed by ongoing and directed donations.  They are:

The UFDC Dorothy and Evelyn Jane Coleman Scholarship for the Research of Antique Dolls

The UFDC Nancy Carlson Scholarship for the Research of Composition Dolls

The Becky Wallace Scholarship Fund for Research of Modern and Collectible Dolls

The Virginia Gordon and Atha Kahler Scholarship Fund for Costuming Dolls

UFDC’s Department of ReAL Services will establish a titled scholarship when a minimum endowment of $20,000.00 has been achieved. A new scholarship is created when either a single donation or a pooled amount in cash or via signed promissory documents with specified time spans reaches the required endowment level.

If sufficient competitive interest is shown and other conditions are met, UFDC’s ReAL Services may grant, at the discretion of the Director of ReAL Services and the Scholarship Committee, a maximum of four scholarships of up to $1,000.00 each annually. One from each of the four scholarships listed above or any combination thereof may be awarded. The number of scholarships to be awarded and their monetary value will be determined annually. A scholarship recipient may receive only one such award in a three-year period. Scholarship awards are announced at UFDC National conventions.

Applicants seeking scholarships must complete the form to be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee that will evaluate the proposed project and recommend recipients. Applicants should apply for a single scholarship that is most closely associated with the area of research - antique, composition or modern/collectible dolls. Scholarships are awarded based on the applicant’s expression of valid need and qualifications.

Scholarship recipients will be given a specific amount of time to complete their designated research. This time period will be negotiated in advance with the Scholarship Committee. The Committee will request periodic progress reports and an account of how scholarship moneys are spent.

Upon completion of the work, the recipient will be required to prepare a manuscript suitable for publication as a seminar kit or an article to be printed in DOLL NEWS, plus an audio-visual program or study set (in slide, video, DVD or CD format) for ReAL Services. UFDC shall retain full rights for publication and/or duplication and distribution of the research subsidized by a scholarship award for the period of one year following completion.

COPYRIGHT: It is the responsibility of the person(s) submitting scholarship completion materials to UFDC to obtain permission to use any and all photos, text, music, or other materials that belong to others which are used in said works. A sample release form for your use is included with this material.

Should a scholarship recipient not fulfill his or her research commitments within the specified time, he or she will be required to refund the total amount of the scholarship to the UFDC Scholarship Fund.

Applications will be accepted annually. They must be completed and postmarked no later than April 1 of each year to the: UFDC Scholarship Committee, 10900 North Pomona Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64153.

The Scholarship Committee appreciates your commitment to serious study advancing the appreciation of dolls and looks forward to receiving your application and proposal.
